COOPERATION WITH THE GREEN CLIMATE FUND

The Green Climate Fund (GCF) based in Songdo, South Korea, is a new global fund established to support the developing countries in their transition towards carbon, climate-sustainable society and economy. It was established by 194 member states of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The Green Climate Fund has become the leading multilateral mechanism of financing climate-sustainable projects in developing countries.

The GCF supports investments in 8 strategic sectors, in accordance with national priorities:

The Minister Branislav Nedimović sent the request to the Executive Director of the Secretariat of the Green Climate Fund, Mr Yannick Glemarec, to nominate the Development Fund of the APV at the national level, with the aim of obtaining the status of the accredited institution after the harmonisation with the GCF procedures.

Important dates

  • 29/10/2020, the Green Climate Fund (GCF) sent an official confirmation of the status of the implementing partner to the Development Fund of the APV, which gave the Development Fund of the APV the right to submit projects to the Green Climate Fund of behalf of the Republic of Serbia that would contribute to the strengthening of the national capacity and initiating climate-responsible investments, starting from strategy development, feasibility studies to investment pilot projects.
  • 27/11/2020, the Readiness project was approved, which started the official process of strengthening the accreditation capacity with the aim of accessing investment financial facilities of the Green Climate Fund.
  • 08/03/2021, an agreement was signed with the United Nationals Office for Project Services (UNOPS), which was hired by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) to offer all necessary support in the implementation of this project.
  • 09/09/2021, the Western Balkans Sustainability Dialogue was held.
  • 22/03/2022, the founding assembly of the WESTERN BALKANS GREEN NAVIGATOR association was held. The association was founded for the purpose of providing active support to the business environment favourable for resolving climate challenges, promotion of climate action, inclusion of climate aspects in everyday business operation, active management of climate-related risks, promotion of financial products and services required for dealing with climate changes, as well as promotion of exchange and share of knowledge.
  • 17/05/2022, the Western Balkans Green Navigator association was presented to the Provincial Government.
  • 12/06/2022, the Readiness project was completed, titled “Increasing national capacity to adapt to climate change through enhanced finance institutions, access to localized climate information and improved climate smart investment frameworks“.
  • 04/07/2022, the conference on the Western Balkans Green Navigator business association was held in Banja Luka.
  • 17/11/2022, the First Western Balkans Sustainable Investing Forum was held at the National Bank of Serbia, with “Responding to corporate challenges in turbulent times” as the main topic.

Western Balkans Sustainability Dialogue

The conference was organised by the Vojvodina Development Fund as the leading regional initiative with the aim of managing corporate climate change strategies through intersectoral dialogue, inspirational partnerships and climate-smart investments. The conference was attended by the senior representatives of international financial institutions, which support climate action in the Western Balkans. This event was a great opportunity to inform and influence the policy of institutions and economic markets in order to find solutions for climate sustainable investments.

First Western Balkans Sustainable Investing Forum

In partnership with the National Bank of Serbia and European Investment Bank, the Western Balkans Green Navigator presented the key principles of corporate transformation towards the climate neutral operation, with good practice examples. The ultimate goal of the Forum was to stimulate business and investment perspectives of the region, by introducing the corporate analysis of climate-related risks and initiatives such as green corporate bonds and the Western Balkans corporate sector Sustainability Index.
